Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District is a frequently mentioned case within the context of freedom of expression, particularly in the school environment. Is it any wonder? Three adolescents who disputed the right of their school district to suspend them for wearing black armbands, with the case climaxing at the U.S. Supreme Court. As one of the petitioners, Chris Eckhardt, said, “Here’s this stupid little thing of just wearing an armband and all of a sudden I’m in front of the United States Supreme Court. Wow! Who thought we’d get here? Who thought a little case from Des Moines over a little piece of cloth would end up here?”
