ABSTRACT
In previous chapters, we have examined the biological, psychological, and social roots of crime; traced the development of crime from childhood; and identified the major risk factors for crime including the role of mental illness. Now it is time to examine the bitter fruit of these malignant roots and distorted developmental processes-crime itself. In the next chapter (chapter 11) we consider economic and property crimes. Here, we address violent crime: robbery, homicide, aggravated assault, violence against family members and intimate partners, hate crimes, and sex crimes. Most of these offenses constitute the Violent Crime Index of the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports we described in chapter 1.
