ABSTRACT
The crimes we discussed in chapter 1 are dealt with by the processes and institutions of the U.S. criminal justice system through the work of law enforcement officers, prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, and jurors. This system took shape early in the 19th century and is based on the English system of justice. It has worked well overall, but is far from perfect.
