ABSTRACT

Contemporary theories and research in learning science are connected to the various forms of constructivism that have emerged over the last 30 years, The two basic forms of constructivism that anchor the ends of the continuum of constructivist theories are psychological constructivism, which focuses on internal cognitive structures, and socioculturalism, which focuses on the level of cultural practices. Several other versions of constructivism fall along a continuum between these two positions. Both of the basic forms of constructivism share similarities and differences with Dewey’s philosophy. Generally, Dewey’s transactional constructivist position falls at the midpoint on this continuum.
