ABSTRACT

Marcia'sextensionofErikson'sworkonidentityformation(seechap.7) transformedaratherdiffusepsychoanalyticconceptintoafruitfulbasisfor empiricalresearch.TheMarciaframeworkandassociatedresearchcontinuetobeheldinhighregard(Berzonsky&Adams,1999;Kroger,2003; Waterman,1999).Sincethe1980s,however,therehasbeenincreasing concernamongadolescentidentitytheoriststhatMarcia'sidentitystatuses donotfullyencompassErikson'sconceptofidentity,muchlessthediverse usesofthatconceptintheoreticalandpopulardiscourse(Bosma& Kunnen,2001;Grotevant,1998;Kunnen&Bosma,2003;Meeusetal., 1999;Schwartz,2001;vanHoof,1999a,1999b).Effortstointerpretandexpandidentityresearchhavegeneratedavarietyofproposalsaboutwhatis, orshouldbe,meantbyidentity.
