ABSTRACT

poet, though intensely aware of man's social and political plight, never sets the collective over and against the individual. For her, "without the salvation of the individual we are lost." Thus such themes as loss of identity, lack of freedom, alienation, lost childhood, exile, and death are treated together, merging singular and plural concerns into one. Particularly poignant are the poems "Eterno oleaje" (Eternal Wave) and "Una patria se ve desde la cumbre" (A Country Seen from Afar), in which images of inner and outer exile from "an impossible country" are juxtaposed.
