ABSTRACT

In this and the next chapter, we turn from strings that fashion thinking as an indi-

vidual enterprise and toward strings that refashion it into a social and largely

cooperative one. We also move from strings that hold the audience at arm’s

length in the role of unacknowledged eavesdropper and toward strings that

acknowledge and even address an audience as an interactive presence. More

specifically, the strings we review fall under a second major cluster, strings

implementing a relational perspective, or relational strings for short.
