ABSTRACT

Quality curricula accessible to all students reflect high expectations of the education system. On graduation bilingual students must be able to be thoughtful, solve problems, and make good use of their language abilities and breadth of cultural experiences whether they opt for academic or vocational programs. Teaching bilinguals means more than just teaching their language and culture. A good bilingual program includes all the academic offerings appropriate for each grade level, uses both students’ home language and English for instruction and assessment, takes advantage of the students’ culture to facilitate and enrich instruction, and introduces students to the intricacies of American culture and the American way of life. Curricula should also include the development of thinking and study skills to help students become good learners.
