ABSTRACT

Creative expression is an important part of contemporary society. And with the rapidly growing number of choices given for use of our leisure time, the role of interpreting and reviewing creative expression in the form of arts and entertainment is also increasing in value. Arts writers cover both breaking news and write features about their creative world. They often also take on the role of critical writers, venturing into the world of opinion expression. Today’s arts writers and editors seek better ways to take arts and entertainment features beyond the routine and ordinary. Daily newspaper weekend sections have been created or redesigned. New departments in popular magazines focus on entertainment and the arts. These publications have extended how they cover the arts and entertainment by adding more depth and scope. Entertainment journalism is maturing alongside the more-established opinion-based arts reviews and critiques (for more discussion, see Bednarski, 1993; Bunn, 1993; Hellyer, 1993; Titchener, 1998; Vawter, 1993).
