ABSTRACT
A student throws a pencil striking another in the eye. A visitor trips in a pothole on the school grounds and injures his knee. An intruder forces a student into a school closet and rapes her. A student severs his finger on a saw in shop class. Another student sneaks out of school during school hours and is injured by a speeding motorist. A teacher sues the school because her supervisor’s evaluation described her lesson plans as unprofessional. Cases like these are the province of the body of law known as torts.
