ABSTRACT

The children’s entertainment and educational programming industry is the source of the messages we have been investigating. Along with the theoretical context we have used to guide our understanding, the variety of effects we have explored, and the mediation of parents, schools, and government, we now focus on the programming that is designed for children and the industry that produces the messages. We begin with a history of the relationship of the marketplace and children’s media. Next we examine programs as case studies in the development of children’s programming.
