ABSTRACT

Dear Dad, I have been invited to write a chapter for a book about African American

fathers. Not surprisingly, you came to mind. For a moment, I had the urge to pick up the phone to call you, to ask for your philosophies or observations about fatherhood. Then I remembered that we don’t have that kind of relationship. We haven’t had that kind of relationship for a long time now. As you know, we haven’t spoken a word to each other in almost four years.
