ABSTRACT

When considering fathers and fathers’ roles in the United States, the image that is usually conjured up is that of a breadwinner, disciplinarian, head-ofhousehold. Those who “father” reside within a household that includes mother, children, and perhaps a family pet. Men who live outside the home and who father and the manner in which they father are routinely ignored. Allen and Connor (1997) noted in their discussion regarding generative fathering, that those men who may not be the biological father can have significant impact on children with whom they interact.
