ABSTRACT

Kylie was referred to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) FollowUp Clinic because of both biological and social risks for developmental problems. Kylie is the third child of parents Sally and Don Smith. She was born at 28 weeks gestation weighing 760 grams (1 lb, 11 oz) and delivered by an emergency cesarean section. Kylie is now 9 months old ad-

justed age (12 months of age minus the 3 months she was born premature). At birth, her respirations were spontaneous, although an endotracheal tube was placed to administer a single dose of surfactant to improve the function of her immature lungs. Kylie was cared for in the NICU for 3 months and required mechanical ventilation for 7 weeks. She was diagnosed with intrauterine growth retardation, respiratory distress syndrome, a Grade I intraventricular hemorrhage on the right, and chronic lung disease (see Glossary). The results of her vision and hearing screening tests were normal. Following discharge from the NICU, Kylie spent 4 weeks on the pediatric unit before she was discharged home at 4 months of age.
