ABSTRACT
Eveleen Wright teaches fifth grade in an inner-city school in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her students are a mix of African Americans and rural White southerners whose parents have moved to the city seeking jobs in the service sector. Her school has a very small library. There is little money available in the school’s budget for supplementary classroom materials.
