ABSTRACT

Swedish day care and preschool are places where almost only women are employed. The consultants too are almost all women. The most frequent problem when preschool teachers and nurses ask for psychological consultation concerns boys—particularly angry and aggressive behavior among boys. The consultee is worried about the angry emotions and actions of the child and wants to understand both the boy’s and his or her own reactions in order to help the boy to cope with his anger in a more varied and flexible way. It is often hard for the consultee to communicate with angry boys, as it evokes affective expressions and fear of losing their professional composure. Nevertheless, helping to understand children and coping with their negative affects is one of the most important and challenging tasks both for primary and secondary caregivers. As a consultant, my task is to help the consultee understand and find strategies to handle these work problems in a successful way.
