ABSTRACT

The way consultation as a professional psychological practice has evolved in Swedish human service agencies is closely linked to how programs for mental health prevention have been developed and organized. This is particularly true regarding services for children in preschool, child day care, child physical and mental health care, and school-based health and psychological care. This chapter provides a brief overview of Swedish services for children where psychologists have been and currently are employed to work as consultants. Within the context of Swedish human service agencies consultee-centered consultation has developed particularly within child day care and preschools, but also in schools and health care settings. The following sections describe the development of consultee-centered consultation and identify the prerequisites for its development within these different institutions.
