ABSTRACT

Shirley Wilson Logan is Associate Professor of English at the University of Maryland, where she teaches courses in composition, rhetoric, and African American literature. Her books “We are Coming”: The Persuasive Discourse of Nineteenth-Century Black Women and With Pen and Voice: A Critical Anthology of Nineteenth-Century African-American Women are foundational texts in feminist/womanist rhetoric and provide important insights into African American contributions to the rhetorical tradition. Her numerous journal and book chapters address the intersections of race, gender, and rhetoric and composition studies. She plays a strong leadership role in the profession, having served as Chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication (2003); Member of the MLA Division on the History of Rhetoric and Composition Executive Committee (2000-05); and President of the Coalition of Women Scholars in the History of Rhetoric and Composition (1998-2000). She earned her PhD in 1988 from the University of Maryland, where she served in various capacities, including Director of the Professional Writing Program for seven years, after being awarded a tenure-track position at that institution. She was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 1998. She is the recipient of a number of fellowships and awards, including the American Association of University Women (2003-04) and National Endowment for the Humanities (2006-07) postdoctoral fellowships.
