ABSTRACT

In the last decade there has been an explosion in public use of the World Wide Web in commercial, government, and educational domains. Educators now have the capacity to co-develop and co-teach (co-facilitate) courses that span continents and bridge cultures with relative ease. This chapter presents an overview of a collaborative model where two or more institutions work together to develop and implement online, web-based courses that seek to build language skills and facilitate cultural awareness. There are a number of issues and concerns to address at the levels of administration, teaching, and learning. Some primary areas to consider are: (a) pre-course inventory, needs assessment and analysis, and master planning; (b) phases and considerations in developing, implementing, and evaluating course content; and (c) some potential pitfalls and possibilities unique to a web-based learning environment.
