ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we turn our attention to clinical interventions for treating a deaf or hard-of-hearing individual’s presenting problems when the ecological context of those problems includes a Rehabilitation Counselor for the Deaf (RCD) from the state Vocational Rehabilitation Agency. An RCD’s role is to assist the client in becoming gainfully employed, which frequently includes providing supportive counseling and coordinating the provision of a variety of other services, such as advanced technical training, academic course work, or independent living skills training as it pertains to vocational pursuits (Nowell & Marshak, 1994; Wright, 1983). Although the importance of family factors is acknowledged, the primary focus of rehabilitation efforts has been toward the disabled individual.
