ABSTRACT
On a mid-November evening, the López1 family hears the swift winds shaking the
windowpanes of its Chicago home. The winds announce the arrival of an early winter, but
inside the house the change of weather is not the talk of the evening. The focus of the
conversation is the food, and eight people enjoy a lively chat as they get ready for supper.
Mrs. López, the matriarch of this family, has a rich chicken soup brewing on the stove,
