ABSTRACT

Before you read this chapter, come with me for a short, virtual visit to the teachers’ lounge for a 15-minute break and a quick cup of coffee or tea. As you are sitting down, a faculty member from another subject matter area says to you, “What are you English types teaching these days? I have lots of your students who don’t have the foggiest idea about the difference between lie and lay, or when to use between or among. Lots of them can’t spell sic'em. All of that stuff I learned in middle school! Isn’t anybody teaching proper English anymore?” What will you say? Be professional.
