ABSTRACT

Programs on workforce literacy and on family literacy seem to be far apart, yet both programs may be found in the same adult education agency.Workforce literacy instruction focuses on the role of the adult as worker and helps the client find employment or improve job prospects. On the other hand, family literacy programs that include the adult education component emphasize the parenting role of the adult in nurturing their child’s literacy and language development. Little coordination seems to occur among these programs (with autonomous operations and separate funding streams), although adults who are served in both programs have overlapping needs.
