ABSTRACT

Like a kaleidoscope, this handbook has looked at many different facets of family literacy. The authors have provided a rich set of information on theory, research, and practice. Collectively, they have explored the roots of early literacy and the struggles of adults to become literate, examined how literacy develops both informally and in formal educational programs, and focused on issues ranging from how children acquire phonological awareness to the larger realm of family culture and language. In the process, they have made recommendations that will help guide the field over the next decade as it addresses how to foster early literacy, satisfy parent and adult needs, improve program quality, and expand our empirical foundation.
