ABSTRACT

People often ask me for a formula for successful school change. Despite our disdain as educators for generalized, one-size-fits-all kinds of answers, I do believe there are backbone processes from which successful school change can take place more easily and effectively. The steps described here are strategies that L.L. Hotchkiss Elementary School used (and continues to use) to move from a limited basal-based reading curriculum to a comprehensive balanced literacy curriculum.
