ABSTRACT
Exhibitions concerning traditional or tribal societies have frequently been criticised for their failure to show them as dynamic, living cultures. Rather, they portray them as they were seen in the past, thereby giving the impression either that the cultures had indeed vanished, as many Europeans in the late nineteenth century had believed they would, or that their lifestyles persist, unaltered, in the manner of their nineteenth-century ancestors.
