ABSTRACT

The models presented in chap. 8 are information processing level models. They are intended to apply to all cases of categorical reasoning, regardless of the topic. The mechanisms of reasoning (e.g., placing objects in semantic space and calculating distances between them) are assumed to be hidden from conscious inspection, although the similarity between objects that results from these calculations (e.g., a feeling) is conscious. This chapter considers situations in which the categorical reasoning process is explicit, and therefore, subject to conscious control.
