ABSTRACT
The power of human language far exceeds the power of communication systems used by other animals. We use language to express ideas, whereas other animals use signals to express emotions. Any essay on human thought has to deal with the role of language. In doing so, we deal with three subquestions: How language should be described, how the brain and mind are organized to deal with language, and how the form of language influences the form of thought.
