ABSTRACT

Over the last century, England has made significant advances in recognizing the rights of children, women, and the elderly. Laws have been implemented to help identify and protect against abuse, and a growing body of research helps identify risk factors for maltreatment. The focus of this chapter is England, although some statistics are available only for England as a whole, or England in combination with Wales. Wherever possible, empirical research conducted in England is cited. All of the qualitative data are from English participants.
