ABSTRACT

Germany has a highly structured social system that has experienced great stress and pressure since reunification in 1990, Like many other postmodern western societies, the Federal Republic of Germany is afflicted with abuse and violence-both within the family, and in other societal institutions, including geriatric care and the workplace. It takes the form of verbal, physical, sexual, and psychological abuse and is manifested in adult-child relationships, spousal relationships, and the treatment of elderly members of German society. What is encouraging is the response of the German government to this issue. A concerted effort on the part of the government and social services is being made to combat this abuse. Together with EU and UN legislation, Germany-wide campaigns via multimedia, professional training and specific legislation are in place to combat abuse on all levels, in all walks of life and in every part of the family unit The German Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth has the overarching responsibility for implementing these governmental policies.
