ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION CARl COM's most enduring feature is its size. As economic communities go, it is very small. The combined area of its members is 271,766 sq kms. Apart from the mainland states of Guyana (214,970 sq kms) and Belize (22,960 sq kms), they range in size from Jamaica (11,424 sq kms) to Montserrat, a mere 102 sq kms. In 1992, CARICOM had a total population of 5.7 million of which Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago accounted for 64 per cent. Guyana, the largest member, had a population of less than 750,000 and a population density of 4 persons per sq km, and Barbados (432 sq kms) almost 600 persons per sq km.
