ABSTRACT

In this chapter I leave aside the question of optimal human being, to consider a host of difficult issues in the philosophy of science, in particular, human science. In the process, we carefully consider “the nature of the person.” What are the different spheres or levels that both constitute and encompass a person, and how are they related to each other? Although the discussion is quite abstract in places, hopefully the inclusion of a salient running example (“Why did the killer do it?”) will help to ground the material and enhance its relevance. But first, let’s talk about some problems in the field of psychology.
