ABSTRACT

When reading a newspaper, normally the first thing that people notice is the photographs (McLellan & Steele, 2001). Photographs both catch readers’ attention and are examined more often than the words on the pages (Wolf & Grotta, 1985). However, their influence extends beyond attracting the eye because photographs influence how people feel about the credibility of the paper (McLellan & Steele, 2001). This influence is so extensive that photojournalists often define to the public what is newsworthy (Miller, 1975).
