ABSTRACT

Jay examines the biography. Jay's enthusiasm is undaunted and he removes the dragonfly to the kill jar, to make sure it's dead and take turns examining it with the magnifying glass. For Vygotsky, spontaneous or everyday concepts developed from human's concrete activity outside any definite system; it tends to move upwards towards abstraction and generalization. He recognized scientific concepts as part of a symbol relation, whereas spontaneous concepts develop directly from experience with material reality. From the perspective of socio-cultural theory, Jay and the author were attempting to enter a new community of practice, the community of entomologists, together. Similarly, Jays agility with and interests in using the mechanical tools of entomology, particularly his ability to catch insects swiftly after that first day, made him an expert in the capture of specimens.
