ABSTRACT

Since the social turn (Clark, 1996) in composition studies, composition scholars have been emphasizing the social relationships surrounding writers as they create texts. In actualizing these relationships in the classroom, writing teachers have developed many approaches, chief among these being community service, or service learning. Composition and service learning, commonly known as CSL, is a growing movement within composition studies and seeks to develop students’ writing skills and civic awareness by exposing students to writing experiences within their local communities. This movement has grown in popularity and has taken a variety of forms, ranging from reflective journals of student experiences to collaborative work environments where students write a useful document that fills some real community need.
