ABSTRACT

In the film Cocoon a group of old people are conveniently taken off to another planet to continue living full and rewarding lives. Movies are most often about the young and the beautiful and movies' issues are most often "youth oriented". Writers are consistently steered away from writing about old people because "everyone" knows that old age is a hard sell in Hollywood. The prevailing sentiment has for years been that older people are not interesting, sexy, or exciting enough to make people spend money to see them. This chapter deals with the absence of ethical and moral examples in our communities and the violence in our societies by desensitizing ourselves, by isolating ourselves, by denial, or even by grim resignation. We believe that as long as we can live in our own little cocoons of safety, we can avoid the violence that permeates our world.
