ABSTRACT

Charles Darwin was born in 1809, in the year that Lamarck’s Zoological Philosophy was first published. He lived until 1882, managing to see his most famous book, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life, pass through six editions. The Origin was first published in 1859, but Darwin had been working sporadically on the manuscript since the early 1840s, soon after completing his fiveyear journey as naturalist aboard her majesty’s ship the Beagle on its voyage around the world.
