ABSTRACT

What ground rules should guide instructor-student interactions outside the familiar confines of the classroom or laboratory? For example, how much latitude do we allow ourselves to enjoy unscripted, after-hours contact with students? The specific cases in this chapter involve responding to inappropriate student behavior outside of class, contact with students on “their turf,” hosting students on “our turf,” and sharing mutual interests with students after hours. The symmetries across this collection of cases offer a useful reminder that outside of our structured academic world we can be as unsure of ourselves as students are of us, and yet it is nearly always our responsibility to observe the boundaries that define our relationships with them.
