Student Deportment in the Classroom

Good manners, social skills, and self-control are not competencies that today’s educators can assume all students have mastered. Nationwide reports suggest that incivility in the classroom has reached a critical mass (Schneider, 1998; Trout, 1998). Accounts of menacing forms of student misbehavior have become more commonplace in such publications as the Chronicle for Higher Education.
