ABSTRACT

At the time of my teacher research study, French was a mandatory second language subject taught to students between the ages of 6 and 13 in Ontario, Canada. This mandate stems from the Official Languages Act of 1985. The purposes for the Act include ensuring respect for English and French as the official languages of Canada, supporting the development of English and French linguistic minority communities, and generally advancing the equality of status and use of the English and French languages within Canadian society. Historically, during the 1600s and 1700s, Canada was fought over by the British and French and was therefore occupied by the British and the French at different points in time.
