ABSTRACT

This chapter describes two multimedia authoring projects in primary schools involving groups of students statemented as having special educational needs (SEN). A statement of SEN is the outcome of a process that identifies and assesses the specific needs of individual students with SEN. The statement details the statutory requirements for that student, any specific needs, educational objectives, and additional support needed from outside the school. This could range from a small amount of classroom help from a learning support assistant within a mainstream primary school, to full time special school provision. In these two case studies the students statemented for SEN received additional help from specialist support teachers from the Hackney Primary and Specialist Support Team. These special needs teachers come into the school for a period of time each week to support the students’ learning and to help these students integrate into mainstream primary schools. The teachers work with the students both in the classroom and on a withdrawal basis.
