ABSTRACT

Present immigration includes families with high education and economic levels as well as large numbers of poor families. Bilingual students cluster in urban centers vexed with economic, political, and social problems. Such problems affect the educational support families and schools provide for students. Economic factors are also connected to language proficiency and education level. In addition to mastery of English, in the present global economy proficiency in another language is a valuable asset. In the lesson on “Language and Careers,” students in Angela’s class discovered the multilingualism in their communities, the business opportunities for various ethnic groups, and the usefulness of languages in the world of work.
