ABSTRACT
We tend to think of learning in terms of the arrangements and procedures involved in
school. This is how we in the United States and other industrialized nations master large,
print-based bodies of information and achieve certification for adult status and
occupations. However, it is not the only way we learn. Much of what we learn is part of
the process of growing up as a member of a social group. We learn to walk, talk, eat,
dress, cook, ride a bicycle, and acquire many other skills and associated knowledge
without taking courses.
