ABSTRACT

Karen teaches a primary level grade in a medium-size city. When I read

about teachers and students at various schools, I typically expect the de-

scription to include the socioeconomic status (SES) and ethnic and cul-

tural makeup of the student body. I am not including those data here for

reasons discussed in greater depth in chapter 7. As you read the descrip-

tion that follows, make some guesses about how the authors of the phonics

program view the relevance of SES, ethnicity, and culture in the teaching

they prescribe.
