ABSTRACT

Jefferson’s comment is compelling to most humans. Families often are where we find our greatest sense of meaning and hope as humans. But what is family? Can it be just a person living alone with her or his beloved pet? Why not? In the 21st century, Teachman et al.’s (2000) conclusion about the diversity of the nature of families is readily apparent. All types of families dot the landscape, and many are not bound by biological-blood relations.
