ABSTRACT
Overview: This chapter presents arithmetic as an acquired cognitive skill, and illustrates how aspects of this skill can be modelled within two production systems. The chapter’s primary aims are to provide an in-depth illustration of the workings of production systems, and to demonstrate one way in which models may be developed with the support of empirical data. The chapter concludes with a discussion of limitations of the simple production system approach.
