ABSTRACT

An injured professional golfer will most likely worsen his ranking and consequently lower his income. At worst, he may not be able to continue to play at all. The purpose of this study was to examine if strength training can be used to prevent common golfing injuries. The investigation has been conducted by literature research. The most injury prone sites for elite golfers are the lower back, the hand/wrist, and the shoulder. These injuries occur through trauma, overexertion and repetitive motion. Strength training can increase tissue strength, euro-muscular strength and endurance. These effects are likely to prevent some athletic injuries. However, to be able to fully prove the injury preventive effects of certain strength training methods, prospective, randomised blind cohort studies have to be made in golf specific environments.
