ABSTRACT

As an introduction to this study, I discussed in chapter 1 some preferences of scientists in designing experiments. The first was to concentrate on manageable small subsystems with a minimal number of parameters. Another, related to the former, was to exclude in “clean” experiments the disturbing factors of the outside world as much as possible. Both preferences were amply present in the investigations discussed in the previous chapter. There, attention was primarily concentrated on small speech segments: phonemes, syllables, and words, not disturbed by other sounds.
