ABSTRACT
A police officer assigned to patrol a particular area refers to it as a beat. A beat cop, by traversing the same route regularly, quickly becomes familiar with the peculiar characteristics of an area and the people who live and do business there. That kind of familiarity allows the officer to locate resources and to recognize and respond quickly to changes.
