ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a community model of implementation and evaluation research on Success for All (SFA) and ALASH, an Israeli adaptation of Bilingual Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (BCIRC; Calderon, Tinajero, & Hertz-Lazarowitz, 1992) in Acre, an Arab-Jewish mixed ethnic community in Israel These two cooperative learning (CL) methods are best known as powerful innovations for literacy development for all students, especially for atrisk students, from kindergarten through elementary school. The programs create a school-wide commitment to give all children the skills, tools, and hopes to become competent readers and effective writers, and thus become literate citizens in society (Slavin, Madden, Dolan, & Wasik, 1996). The potential of these programs to advance children, teachers, schools, and communities are the focus of this chapter.
